Baccarat is strictly a casino game. It is similar to, and related to the French term ‘chemin de fer’ or ‘railroad’, which gives you some idea of how fast you can lose your money at it.

At the baccarat table, you bet cash, and lots of it. You won’t even be allowed to start playing for less than twenty dollars.

Everyone dresses up to play, even the croupier, and the area is marked off with a velvet rope like the big poker games, to keep cheap kibitzers from leaning over anyone’s shoulder, or offending the players with the sight of a shirt without a tie.

At baccarat, one thing you get for your money is a very high-toned environment.

Vaguely like blackjack, this game has virtually no appeal to the gambler on the make. The reason is that there are no choices. The house makes the rules for everyone, not just the dealer. All you have to do is pay your money and do what the croupier tells you to do.

Naturally, professional gamblers don’t go for this in any way. The house advantage for baccarat is only 1.15 percent, but gamblers lose much more than they should according to the percentages, usually by playing foolishly.

Baccarat is rather more elegant than other mechanical or skill-free kinds of gambling, like lotteries and slot machines, and for this reason it attracts rich people who don’t know much about odds and gaming.

You don’t have to know anything in baccarat, actually, because all decisions are made for you by the house. All you have to do is put up the cash.

The object of the game in baccarat is to get a card total of 9. You cannot go over 9, as you cannot top 21 in blackjack, because any card over 9 simply equals the second digit of the count.

Thus, a 13 is counted as a 3, a 15 as a 5, and so on. The deal is from a shoe containing several shuffled decks, so counting cards is out in this game.

In Las Vegas, 10s and face cards count 0 and aces count 1. A hand containing a 7 and a 4, therefore, counts as 1, and the hand will be hit on the next round.

Both the bank and the player must stand at 7. An 8 or 9 is considered a natural, and the other hand cannot draw against it. The player must stand at 6, but the bank draws on a 6 if the player draws, stands if the player stands.

For a player, the complete rules are as follows: if your hand totals 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, draw. If your hand is a 6 or a 7, stand. If your hand has an 8 or a 9, you win, except if the house also has a natural.

In case of a tie, a new hand is played. For the bank, rules are also fixed: if the hand is under 3, the bank draws, except when the player draws an 8. With 4, the bank draws, except when the player draws a 1, 8, or a 9.

With a 5, the bank draws, unless the player draws a 1, 2, 3, 8 or 9. With a 6, the bank draws, only if the player draws a 6 or a 7. The player has no choice as to strategy, and neither does the bank. As a matter of fact, in most casinos, the hand dealt to the croupier is the player’s hand.

After the deal, but before the draw, comes the betting. Other players at the table have the chance to bet either on your hand, or the bank’s.

Thus, if you could go to the baccarat table, and simply bet on the bank all the time, you would eventually come out 1.15 percent ahead, just like the house.

Unfortunately, everyone at the table must take a turn at head-to-head play with the dealer. Unfortunately, too, the kind of money involved in baccarat prohibits anyone without at least a medium-sized fortune from trying to outlast the house.

And if you have a medium-sized fortune in cash at your disposal, you can get better odds from a savings account.
